Jazz great Charles Mingus crafted compositions that built upon the soul-infused and upbeat hard bop he grew up on, but also drew heavily from black gospel music, classical, free form jazz, and Third Stream. His music focused on collective improvisation, emphasizing interactions between musicians and instruments as much as the individual instruments themselves. The resulting music–a combination of seemingly disparate inspirations, emphasizing instrumental interplay–often defied categorization, but many of his works, including 1963’s “The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady,” are regarded as some of the most influential in all of jazz history.
Our Black Magic Woman Imperial Stout is one big, bad, bold brew. 11 different malts, 5 different hops, and a smooth, warming alcohol bite make for the perfect evening sipper to pair with chocolate, cheesecake, or a rich, buttery cheese. What could we possibly add to this ensemble to make it any better?
With every batch of Black Magic Woman we make, we set some aside to age on high quality tawny port-soaked, moderately toasted French oak for at least six months. The end result is a beer even more decadent than the original, full of vibrant fruit notes, delicate oak tannins, warm vanilla, and caramelized sugars that have been extracted from the lightly charred barrel wood. The additional aging period also makes for a slightly dryer and more mellow, integrated beer, really allowing the additional flavors and aromas imparted by the oak and spirit infusion to both intermingle with the base beer and shine through on their own. The end result is a beer that–like the album of the same name–truly defies categorization.
As with all of our Kahoy Series brews, this beer doesn’t come out on a specific schedule – instead, it’s ready when it’s ready, and when (in the opinion of our Brewmaster) the flavors have mellowed and mingled so that it can provide that perfect craft beer experience. This beer is also an extremely limited release, limited to a small number of waxed, hand-numbered bottles and an even smaller number of small kegs available at select locations, so get it while you can!
