Warty Pig Southern Hemisphere RyePA

The West Coast of America isn’t the only region of the world well suited for hop production, nor is it the only one where scientists have been attempting to hybridize and crossbreed hop varieties to create new, exciting strands. Fortunately for those of us on this side of the world, Australia and New Zealand have been pushing the boundaries of hop experimentation, too, introducing a ton of new varieties with names like Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Jade, and Southern Cross.  We recently got our hands on some of these new varieties, and the overwhelming assortment of earthy, herbal, spicy, fruity notes made us feel like a kid in a candy store, with so many favorites and so many difficult choices to make about how to incorporate these wonderful hops in our beer.

Unfortunately, when it comes to beer, we don’t really like difficult choices or playing favorites.  So, naturally, we used them all.  Warty Pig Southern Hemisphere RyePA incorporates spicy rye and moderately caramelized malts to provide the basis for a Southern Hemisphere onslaught of hop aromatics and flavors, ranging from the passionfruit and citrus notes of Galaxy to the berry-like, grapey spiciness of Nelson Sauvin.  The Pacific Jade even lends a touch of blackberry and coconut-like oaken esters to the proceedings.  A unique and mind altering bouquet for a new generation (and new hemisphere!) of brewers, hopheads, and craft beer enthusiasts alike.

Named after the Visayan Warty Pig (Sus cebifrons), a critically endangered species of pig native to the central Visayas.  Though a subspecies of the Warty Pig was once found on Cebu, this group has been declared locally extinct since 2000. These days, the Visayan Warty Pig–one of four endemic species of pigs found only in the Philippines, by the way–can only be found on two neighboring islands, where it is facing extinction as a result of habitat loss, food shortages, and hunting.  As with all our Humulus-Lapu-Lapulus beers, 10% of all proceeds from these beers will go to programmatic efforts by a wildlife conservation organization dedicated to protecting the Warty Pig and other Cebuano area natural treasures.
